2018... what a year! We grew about 2,000 lbs of produce at our farm – 250% of what we grew last year – and donated an additional 2,400 lbs of surplus from neighboring farms like @granorfarm and @tomatobliss. That translates to over 29,000 servings of fresh, sustainably grown fruits & vegetables donated to SW Michigan communities in need – more than double the 13,600 servings we donated last year! But we didn't just donate produce; we also launched educational programming this year in partnership with River Valley School District and @chikamingopenlands, and sponsored 4 mobile food pantries in communities that had previously lacked food security assistance. Our most sincere gratitude goes out to all of the great food pantries and organizations that worked with us in 2018 to get healthy food to those who need it most. Just dropped off our final #fooddonation of 2018 at River Valley Senior Center, continuing a tradition of starting & ending the season there (RVSC was the first organization we ever donated to). The spinach, beets & turnips we harvested this week are extra sweet since they produce additional sugars in cold temps so the water they hold doesn’t freeze & shatter their cells. Natural antifreeze! Believe it or not, there’s still quite a bit of growing going on underneath the snow. Definitely slowing down as the days get shorter and we approach the solstice, but not dormant quite yet! The Harris clan came out to help with our final #MobileFoodPantry of the year in #NewTroyMichigan, and it was our most successful yet! 131 people served, including 34 children and 35 seniors. As always, the @feedingwestmich truck provided a wide range of goods, while we had 4 tables full of freshly harvested produce from #HFFF and @granorfarm. Right after this photo was taken, @harborcountrymission came by to pick up what was left over and will be distributing it to people in need over the next few days. Thanks to @new_troy_community_center for hosting again, and to Church of the Mediator and Harbert Community Church for providing volunteers.
