Hey, could use an extra hand over here! With at least another couple of months left in the growing season, we are looking for help - both hired and volunteered - to ensure that we finish our 2nd full season strong. We are able to hire part time workers now through mid November, with the idea that they’d be well positioned to return in March of 2020 as permanent employees. And as always, we gratefully welcome anybody interested in volunteering!

Ideally we’d like to bring on one person with at least some gardening experience at 10-15 hrs/wk, but we are flexible. Starts at $14-16/hr, depending on experience, & has lots of potential for growth beyond this growing season for the right fit. Main tasks are centered around seeding, transplanting, harvesting, processing & caring for a wide range of fruit & vegetable crops (some heavy lifting involved, & lots of bending, kneeling & crouching), but there will also be opportunities to participate in our education & community outreach/coordination work as well. Finally found an opportunity to snap a photo of the fine folks volunteering at God‘s Abundant Pantry at Andrews University in Berrien Springs, another one of the food pantries we started working with this year. It’s always fun to bring a wide variety of produce and hear about the reactions from people who go to the pantry, many of which are students from Africa, Asia, and Central America. Certain greens, herbs, and hot peppers we grow tend to go a lot faster here than at other pantries we donate to! As the season progresses, we’re learning to better select which kinds of produce to donate where, while still making sure to continue introducing people to fruits and vegetables they might not be as familiar with. Looking forward to having an opportunity during the off-season to refine and expand upon our recipe/nutrition info cards; we’re getting lots of great feedback from folks in the communities we work with!

Our 1st ripe #cayenne of the season(!), plus a mutant #radish. It’s taking so long for our tomatoes and peppers to ripen this summer, & now summer’s almost over! Hoping this little warm spell will push a bunch of our slicers & spicers over the finish line.

Looooooonnnnggg tables of produce lately. Over 575 lbs of local produce, including about 265 from our farm & 310 from neighboring farms & gardens like @granorfarm, were donated over the last 2 weeks, & that’s on top of the roughly 10,000 lbs delivered by the 2 @feedingwestmich mobile food pantry trucks we sponsored! .

Happy September! It’s been another whirlwind these past 10 days. 2 more mobile food pantries w/ @feedingwestmich, including our 1st one ever in Baroda (huge success!) & our 3rd this year in Galien. We were very excited to bring our 1st apple harvest of the year, including a bunch of scabby apples we sliced up, preserved w/ salt water, & packaged in containers generously donated by @whistlestopgrocery. We were also gratified to coordinate the distribution of leftovers from the mobiles to local food pantries, senior centers, & organizations like @harborcountrymission to make sure nothing went to waste.

Wow, can’t believe it’s been 4 whole weeks since we last posted anything! Such a busy stretch of time it’s been. Here are a few highlights; more coming soon:
1) Our fantastic volunteer Diane has been brightening up the farm with her hard work, infectiously positive energy, & wonderful smile since early Spring. Here she is with a nice harvest of #purplepotatoes last week. Send us a message if you’re interested in volunteering - we can definitely use more help!
2) We’re getting an abundant and pristine crop of #cucumbers this season after trying a new, less dense planting method. Sometimes less is more!
3 & 4) Filling tables & shelves with #HFFF & @granorfarm produce at the Anointed Impact Ministry (Benton Harbor) & St Mary’s (Buchanan) food pantries earlier this month.
5) This year has been amazing for cilantro with all of the cool summer weather!
6) More than half of the produce we brought to our 3rd mobile food pantry in New Troy was grabbed before I could snap a pic! Over the last 4 weeks, we’ve delivered over 1,050 lbs of healthy produce to people in need.

The volunteers at Anointed Impact Ministry in Benton Harbor know how to have fun while packing produce bags for their food pantry! We also filled a fridge for First Church of God’s Community Food Network meeting yesterday in Benton Heights. All told, we donated over 160 lbs of delicious and nutritious #organic produce from our farm and @granorfarm to underserved communities this week.

#HFFF sponsored yesterday’s @feedingwestmich #mobilefoodpantry in Galien & added some of our own produce, including some early blueberry & raspberry harvests, to the potatoes, apples, beans, milk & other staples the Feeding America truck brought in. We served over 80 households representing more than 230 individuals - the biggest mobile food pantry turnout we’ve had yet!
